Honolulu High-capacity Transit Corridor Project

Honolulu Fare Collection System Options Analysis

The Honolulu High-capacity Transit Corridor Project entails construction of a 20-mile elevated rail line with 21 stations to link West Oahu with downtown Honolulu and Ala Moana Center. The project is scheduled for completion in 2031. Acumen staff conducted a comprehensive study with analysis to determine the most appropriate fare collection system option for the region. The purpose of the study was to assist the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) in making an informed decision.

The study consisted of examining the existing bus fare collection system, existing and emerging technologies, and recommending the systems and equipment to achieve HART’s goals. The study addressed technology, station planning, equipment requirements and capital and operating costs for various fare collection options in use by other transit systems similar to this region in size and complexity.
